The ISOCON Isolating Signal Converter can accept a wide range of inputs including 20mA, thermocouple. RTD and voltage signals. The units produce an isolated high level DC output of either voltage or current.
Full 3 port isolation is standard as is an isolated transmitter supply which can be used to power any standard 2-wire 4-20mA transmitter.
The input type and range can be user selected using simple DL switches inside the unit. All RTD and Thermocouple inputs can be fully linearised.
Non-interactive zero and span controls make adjustment of the unit quick and simple.
Other features include optional inversion of the input signal, an optional second analogue output (see Dualcon data sheet) and an optional Relay alarm output.
The unit is supplied with two power supply options, either wide ranging ac or dc The ac version operates from any supply from 90 to 264 Vac and the de version operates from 12 to 36Vdc.
Specials such as custom linearisation, frequency input and maths functions are also available.

Product Help
Effect on calibration when changing dip switch settings
I’m commissioning a sensor with a isocon configured for 0-20mV to 4-20mA, if the DIP switches were changed and then returned to their original settings, would the calibration be retained?
If the ISOCON was never powered up when the DIP switches were changed, then the calibration would still be retained in the memory, but it wouldn’t be useful unless the DIP switches were returned to the original configuration before powering the ISOCON.
If the ISOCON has been powered up with the DIP switches in the wrong position you would need to re-calibrate the ISOCON by injecting 0mV and 20mV and using the Up/Down push buttons on the front panel to get the output to read 4mA at 0mv and 20mA at 20mV inputs. This procedure is explained in the manual.
Response time
What is the output response time for a change in the input signal?
The response time constant (10-90%) is 50ms +/-10ms.
Sink and Source configuration for 4-20mA input and output
Choosing Sink or Source for the Input or Output is not a configuration option incorporated into the ISOCON part number. What is the default setting, is it sink sink?
The default setting is sink for the input and source for the output. The ISOCON can be set to a different configuration in the factory if you request it on the order.
Changing sink/source settings influence on calibration
if the customer changes the setting for source/sink themselves, will it upset the factory calibration?
If the 4-20mA output is changed from sink to source or vice versa, then will be no affect on the output calibration.
If the the 4-20mA input is changed then it may be necessary to tweak the output calibration to get the maximum accuracy.
4-20mA current loop receiver
Can the ISOCON be used as a 4-20mA current loop receiver. Can it be utilised as either a transmitter or a receiver?
Yes the ISOCON can be configured to receive a 4-20mA current loop input, and then retransmit in any of the usual analogue outputs.
What is output of 4-20mA if no input
What happens to the 4-20mA output signal if the input is say 0V or 0mA for a 1-5V or 4-20mA input configuration?
You should find that the 4-20ma will drop to 2.9mA, and the same without any input.
Cooling control signal 0-10Vdc to compressor 0-5Vdc control input
We need a converter for taking a modulating 0-10 vdc cooling signal from a controller to a 0-5 vdc modulator on a compressor?
We would suggest an ISOCON with a 0 to 10 volt input to 0 to 5 volt output conversion configuration.
Syringe pump 0-1V output to PLC 0-10V input
We will be using a syringe pump with a 0-5000psi range. It has an analogue 0-1V output reflecting the current pressure, ie 2500psi is 0.5V. This voltage will be fed into a PLC, but we need to amplify the output voltage to increase the resolution of the PLC.
We would suggest an ISOCON pre-configured for a 0…1 volt input to 0…10 volt output conversion.
What is output of 4-20mA if device is unpowered but loop is powered
What would the output be if we powered off the ISOCON unit but it continued to be provided with 24Vdc loop power for the 4-20mA output. Would it be a simple 0mA or would there be some sort of residual current output? There may be a condition where our equipment is off, but the power source and receiver are still on.
The output would go to zero once the power is turned off, even for current sink mode using an external loop power.
I/O resolution
What is the effective input to output resolution of the ISOCON?
It varies depending on the exact input/output types, but typically it is in the order of 13 bits or 0.01221%.
Temperature sensor 4-20mA to 0-10V signal
I need to convert at 4-20mA signal from a temperature sensor to a 0-10v signal?
The output of the temperature sensor can be sent to a pre-configured ISOCON 4-20mA input signal and convert to a 0-10 volt output signal.
0-1V to 0-10V conversion resolution
What would be the 0-1V input and 0-10v output sensitivity/resolution of the ISOCON 6? Our input resolution into the ISOCON will be 1mV, so we are hoping that the ISOCON will be able to detect this level of voltage change, and boost the output voltage as required.
The conversion resolution will be in the order of 13 bit, so the input resolution will be better than 0.2 mV input, and the output resolution will be better than 2 mV.
Marshalling terminal 250 ohm resistor 1-5V to PLC 0-10V converter module
We have a 4-20mA PT and converted to 1-5V on the marshalling terminals using 250 ohm resistors so they can be used by the safety PLC which takes 1-5V as the input. We need to repeat this 1-5V signal to a remote PLC which only takes an input of 0-10V. Our intention is to make a parallel connection to the marshalling terminal where the 1-5V is measured and use a converter module to produce 0-10V.
We would suggest a pre-configured version of the ISOCON with a 1 to 5 volt input and 0 to 10 volt output.
SELV 0-10V control output isolation from VSD non-isolated input
Will this work as a 0-10 input to 0-10 Volt output Isolation module? I want to isolate an SELV control circuit from the input to a VSD with non isolated input.
Yes, the ISOCON can be configured to isolate a signal and retransmit the same signal, but bear in mind that this will introduce a small error due to the accuracy of the input to output conversion.

Dimensions
What are the dimensions of the ISOCON signal converter?
The ISOCON has a depth of 114.5 mm, height of 99 mm, and a width of 12.5 mm.
0-60Vdc signal conditioning to 4-20mA
I need signal conditioning to convert a 0-60 V dc signal to a 4-20 mA output, what would you suggest?
It is possible to manufacture a special version of ISOCON to accept a higher input voltage of 0-60 volts dc, but it is not possible to re-purpose this version to another configuration, so it can only be used for 0-60 volts inputs.

Make inverted output zero with loss of input signal
We want to use the device to INVERT 4-20mA (input) to 20-4mA (output). I wanted to know if there is a way, where upon loss of input signal, we can make the converter not send any output signal ( 0mA or open).
It is possible to do this with a standard ISOCON-LIN, which uses a look up table of input and output values. As an example it could map the following values:
- 0mA in to 0mA out
- 2.9mA in to 0mA out
- 3mA in to 21mA out
- 20mA in to 4mA out
- 22mA to 4mA out
… or something similar depending on your requirements.
Field device 12-20mA output to ICSS 4-20mA input
I need a converter that takes in a 12-20mA input from a field device and outputs as 4-20mA to a ICSS system with built in Galvanic Isolators?

How does High & Low Burnout feature work
I have technical question on the High and Low Burn Out feature upon loss of the input signal. I want to understand if “High burnout ” means that the upon loss of input signal , the output signal would be 20mA?
When a fault on the pcb is detected, or if a thermocouple or RTD input fails, then Burnout will be triggered.
Burnout option is selected using switch block S3 switch 7, High Burnout setting is ‘0’ and Low Burnout setting is ‘1’. The Burnout output values are as follows:
Output Range | High Burnout | Low Burnout |
---|---|---|
0-10 V | 11.5 V | 0 V |
4-20 mA | 23 mA | 2 mA |
0-20 mA | 23 mA | 0 mA |
0-5 V | 11.5 V | 0 V |
Square root extraction output mode
Is there an existing part code I can use for ordering a configured sqrt extraction output for each of the following :
- 4-20mA sqrt
- 0-20mA sqrt
- 0-5Vdc sqrt
- 1-5Vdc sqrt
- 0-10Vdc sqrt
The square root function is a built-in configuration option for the ISOCON, and is turned on by switching a DIL switch inside the unit. This can be set up in the factory and calibrated. The part number would end with -001 instead of standard -000.
0-20mA input to 0-80mA output signal conversion
We are looking for a device to convert a 0-20mA input to a 0-80mA output?

Reverse SqRt 4-20mA input to linear 4-20mA
I need a device to convert square root 4-20mA signal to linear. A digital controller accepts 4-20mA in linear form however, the input signal comes from a flow meter with 4-20mA water flow transmitter in square root form.
To reverse a SqRt extraction signal to Linear, you would use a Quadratic Extraction on the SqRt input. However since there is no standard Quadratric Function mode for the ISOCON, so we would suggest the using the ISOCON-LIN version which can be configured by the user to include up to 31 custom linearisation points. You can use this sqrt 4-20mA conversion page to determine conversion values or generate your own linearisation values using this tool.
PLC 0-5Vdc control signal to fan 0-10Vdc reference signal
I have a fan that requires a 0-10Vdc signal for speed reference. The control voltage from the CPU is only 0-5Vdc. What would you suggest to control the fan?
We would suggest you use an ISOCON configured with a 0 to 5 volt dc input and a 0 to 10 volt dc output.
PID controller 4-20mA output to 0-5V pump control input conversion
I am looking for a signal converter to convert a 4-20 mA signal from a PID controller to a 0-5 V signal that will output to a pump. The converter will be mounted on a DIN rail in a control panel.
We would suggest you use an ISOCON configured with a 4 to 20 milliamp input and a 0 to 5 volt output.
20-4mA to 4-20mA inversion
I am looking for a signal inverter to invert 20-4mA to a 4-20mA signal?
The 4-20mA to 20-4mA version of the ISOCON can be used to invert 20-4mA to a 4-20mA signal as well, since it does not matter whether the input is inverted or not, since the output is inverted relative to the input.
RoHs compliance and CE marking
Is the ISOCON RoHs compliant and CE marked?
Yes The ISOCON is RoHs compliant and CE marked, and both are included on the product labelling.
PLC 4-20mA control output to 0-10V dc motor control
I have a PLC that has a 4-20mA output, but I have a DC motor control that only takes in a 0-10V input. I cannot get a 0-10V output on my PLC or a 4-20mA input on my DC control. The typical speed on the DC control is about 10% of the speed range. In other words, the motor can run up to 5000 rpm, but it typically runs at 500 rpm, so the would be around 1Vdc.
We would suggest you use an ISOCON signal converter configured with a 4 to 20 milliamp input and a 0 to 10 volt output.
0…12 and 24Vdc to 4-20mA conversion
Is it possible for the ISOCON to convert 0 to 24Vdc input to 4-20 mA output, and 0 to 12Vdc input to 4-20 mA output?
Yes, both of these conversion configurations are possible with the Isocon, it is possible to set any voltage range up to 40 volts dc.
Loop powered 4-20mA input
Is it possible to provide loop power on the input side for 4-20mA?
Yes the input can be configured for loop power or sink by the operator as standard.
4-20mA to 0-10V conversion with <500 ohms input impedance
We require a current to voltage converter (input 4-20 milliamp to output 0-10 volt), and it should have an input load of less than 500 ohms.
The Isocon has a current input impedance of 15 ohms, and we would suggest the configuration below for your application.

0 to 1 volt output
According to the Isocon data sheet the output can be set to 0-1 Vdc, but I can’t find instructions in the manual?
It is possible to configure the Isocon to provide a 0-1Vdc output, but it would need to be set up at the factory.
The standard 0-20mA output is utilised with a custom resistor fitted at the factory.
The problem with turning down the 0-10V signal is that there is a limit to how much the span can be reduced.
Alternatively it is possible for the user to fit an additional resistor to the output terminals, and use the zero button to obtain 0-1Vdc out
60 second averaging operation
When using the ISOCON-AVE with a long averaging time of up to 60S, how many data points are used in the averaging algorithm? I have a periodic flow rate that results from a valve dumping material on a sensor every 7 seconds or so, and I am looking to find an average flow rate over time. However, with all of the material coming in over a very short time window, if the sample rate of ISOCON-AVE is something like once a second, I am afraid that it will miss most of the flow rate signal if the flow of material happens between sampling points.
The Isocon-Ave uses a rolling averaging table, over a variable amount of time, and it can be setup from 1 second up to 10 minutes using the internal dip switches. So in your 60 second example, it holds in memory the last 60 seconds worth of readings. The output is the average of all of them. As each new value is added to the table, the oldest is removed, and the average is recalculated and the output is updated. The sample rate is once every 20 milliseconds, so it does this 50 times a second.
Convert 4-20mA output to max load 750Ω
I have an output of 4 to 20 mA which can only supply a maximum load of 500 ohms, but the device I’m connecting to requires a 4 to 20 mA with a maximum load of 750 ohm, can the Isocon handle this?
The ISOCON can source 4-20mA into up to 750 ohms so should be fine for this application.

Linear to square root conversion
Can the ISOCON electronically perform the linear to square root conversion?
Yes the ISOCON comes with a selectable option to convert the output from linear to square root.
MVCON replacement
I’m looking for the Model MVCONHL-FC which has a 2 – 9 V dc input, 4 – 20 mA output, 115 V ac (50/60Hz) supply, and a 2 VA supply power?
The MVCON was made obsolete in 2006. The isocon-3 has the same terminal numbers as the MVCON but is in a smaller enclosure.
