User Guide
This tool will convert a vehicles fuel economy in miles per gallon (mpg) or kilometres per litre (km/L) to the equivalent fuel consumption figure in litres per 100 kilometres (L/100 km) or gallons per 100 miles (gal/100 mi).
Both fuel economy and fuel consumption are used to compare the cost of running different types of vehicles. Some countries will favour one over the other, therefore this tool will help you convert figures for fuel economy advertised in one country, to the equivalent fuel consumption figure used in another country.
Formula
The formula used to calculate a vehicles fuel consumption (V/d, fuel volume used per unit distance travelled) from its fuel economy (d/V, distance travelled per unit of fuel volume) is:
FC = 1 / FE
Symbols
- FC = Fuel consumption
- FE = Fuel economy
Fuel Economy (FE, d/V)
Fuel economy is a measure of how much distance a vehicle can travel on one unit volume of fuel.
Fuel Consumption (FC, V/d)
Fuel consumption is a measure of how much fuel volume will be used to travel a fixed measure of distance.
