User Guide
This tool will convert a vehicles fuel consumption in litres per 100 kilometres (L/100 km) or gallons per 100 miles (gal/100 mi) to the equivalent fuel economy figure in miles per gallon (mpg) or kilometres per litre (km/L).
Both fuel consumption and fuel economy are used to compare the cost of running different types of vehicles. Some countries will favour one over the other, therefore this tool will help you convert figures for fuel consumption advertised in one country, to the equivalent fuel economy figure used in another country.
Formula
The formula used to calculate a vehicles fuel economy (d/V, distance travelled per unit of fuel volume) from its fuel consumption (V/d, fuel volume used per unit distance travelled) is:
FE = 1 / FC
Symbols
- FE = Fuel economy
- FC = Fuel consumption
Fuel Consumption (FC, V/d)
Fuel consumption is a measure of how much fuel volume will be used to travel a fixed measure of distance.
Fuel Economy (FE, d/V)
Fuel economy is a measure of how much distance a vehicle can travel on one unit volume of fuel.
