User Guide

This calculator will estimate the amount of time it will take a machine of a specified width and speed to completely process an area of land.

Formula

The land coverage time formula used by this calculator is:

t = A / (w x v)

Symbols
  • t = Time to complete
  • A = Area of land
  • w = Width of machine
  • v = Speed of machine

Land Area (A)

Enter the total area of the land you plan to process.

Machine Width (w)

Enter the effective width of the machine that will be used to process the land.

Machine Speed (v)

Enter the average speed that the machine will progress over the land.

Completion Time (t)

This is the estimated time it will take to process the entire land area. This should not be treated as a precise figure since there are factors which will increase the calculated completion time, such as overlap and turning time.

Since land length and land width are not defined, it is assumed that there will be no overlap to calculate the completion time. Since the rows that the machine will create will rarely divide exactly into the full width of the land, there will be an error due to the overlap of the final row. This error will be less significant for areas with a large number of rows.

For example, a width of land that is 10 times greater than the width of the machine could produce a completion time which is up to ~10% lower than one which is corrected for overlap.

For a more precise estimate of completion time you will need to determine the number of rows the machine will create and how long it will take to turnaround at the end of each row:

Final Row Overlap Time (OT) = Completion Time (t) x Machine Width / Land Width

Total Turning Time (TT) = Turning Time x Land Width / Machine Width

Corrected Completion Time = t + OT + TT

There are other sources of error such as effective machine width, obstacles, etc… so the calculation of completion time using this tool should only be treated as an optimistic estimate for approximate calculations.

Applications

These are some of the applications for which this calculator could be used:

  • Mowing a grass
  • Ploughing
  • Crop spraying
  • Harvesting crops
  • Sowing seeds
