User Guide

This tool will calculate the area of the various surfaces inside a rectangular shaped room.  The surfaces are divided into floor area, walls area and ceiling area, which are each calculated from the the room dimensions.

The floor area helps with choosing the quantity of carpet or other type of flooring material required.

The walls area provides the total surface area for painting, tiling or wallpapering all the vertical surfaces in a room.

The ceiling area indicates how many tiles, or how much paint or artex is required to cover the whole upper surface of the room.

The floor and walls area calculation is combined together to help with tasks such as determining the quantity of  tiles required to cover a bathroom.

The walls and ceiling area total is added together to assist with painting projects to estimate the coverage area.

Formulas

The formulas used by this room area calculator to determine each individual parameter are:

FA = L · W

WA = 2 · H · (L + W)

CA = L · W

TA = 2 · ((L · W) + (H · (L + W)))

FA + WA = (L · W) + (2 · H · (L + W))

WA + CA = (2 · H · (L + W)) + (L · W)

L = FA / W
L = CA / W
L = (WA / (2 · H)) – W

W = FA / L
W = CA / L
W = (WA / (2 · H)) – L

H = WA / (2 · (L + W))

Symbols

  • L = Length of room
  • W = Width of room
  • H = Height of room
  • FA = Floor area
  • WA = Walls area
  • CA = Ceiling area
  • TA = Total area of all room surfaces

Length (L)

This is the length of the room, or the longest horizontal distance between corners.

Width (W)

This is the width of the room, or the shortest horizontal distance between corners.

Height (H)

This the height of the room, or the distance between the floor and ceiling.

Floor Area (FA)

This is the total area of the lower room surface.

Walls Area (WA)

This is the total area of all four vertical room surfaces

Ceiling Area (CA)

This the total area of the upper room surface

Total Area (TA)

This is the total area of all horizontal and vertical room surfaces.

FA + WA

This is the combined total area for the floor and walls.

WA + CA

This is the combined total area for the walls and ceiling.
