An engineer required a temperature sensor for R&D on industrial motors submerged up to 200 meters. The solution had to withstand high pressure and integrate into a subsea multi-sensor network. The SSTT series temperature transmitter was selected for its robust, corrosion-resistant housing and, most critically, its high-integrity subsea connector, providing a reliable and pressure-proof link to the customer’s equipment.
- Application: Temperature monitoring on submerged industrial motors.
- Challenge: Withstanding constant hydrostatic pressure of 20 bar (200m depth).
- Requirement: A modular connection point for integration into a sensor harness.
- Solution: A subsea temperature transmitter with a 3000m rated connector.
A research and development engineer from a manufacturer specializing in industrial pumps and submerged electric motors required a solution for accurately monitoring temperature. The application involved placing temperature sensors directly onto their motors, which operate while fully submerged in water at depths of up to 200 meters (approximately 656 feet). This operational depth creates a high-pressure environment of 20 bar (290 psi) that the sensor housing and its connections must withstand without leaking.
The primary goal was to acquire reliable temperature data to ensure the motors operate within safe thermal limits, preventing overheating and potential failure during the R&D and validation phases. The engineer specified the need for a Pt100 resistance temperature detector (RTD) with an integrated 4-20mA transmitter output for seamless integration with their industrial control and data acquisition systems. A key aspect of the requirement was the need for a sensor with a relatively short cable. This was because the sensor would be connected to a larger, pre-existing subsea cabling harness that links multiple sensors on the motor assembly, demanding a reliable and pressure-rated disconnection point rather than a simple, continuously potted cable.
The proposed solution was the SSTT series subsea temperature transmitter. This device is specifically designed for long-term immersion and operation at significant depths. The selection of a marine bronze housing provides excellent resistance to corrosion, ensuring the sensor’s longevity and integrity in a permanently wet environment. The standout feature for this particular application is the high-pressure subsea connector. While the customer’s requirement was for a 200 meter depth rating, the SSTT series’ connector is rated for depths up to 3000 meters when mated. This significant over-specification provides an exceptional safety margin, giving the customer complete confidence in the long-term sealing performance and preventing any risk of water ingress at the connection point. The provision of a short, 5-meter mating cable assembly allows for easy and reliable integration into the customer’s existing multi-sensor network on the submerged motor, providing a true plug-and-play solution for a challenging subsea application.
